Sedation Techniques

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is administered by a pill. Typically, we will use Valium or Xanax to put the patient to sleep. The oral sedative will be provided right before your procedure begins. During the procedure, the patient may feel drowsy and recall fragments afterward. Always have someone to take you to and from our office.

Intravenous Sedation

By using intravenous sedation, your sedation levels will be regulated by our staff. On the day of the procedure, a needle will be inserted into your vein. Before the procedure begins, the sedative is released into your vein and distributed throughout your bloodstream. You will experience a moderate level of sedation while you are under a deep state of consciousness.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is an odorless and colorless gas that is commonly used to sedate patients who have dental anxiety. The nitrous oxide (laughing gas) will be administered with a gas mask. At first, you will experience a tingling sensation, which is the first sign that the sedation is working. After the procedure is completed, you can expect to resume normal bodily functions after oxygen levels return.
